AKC Obedience with Anne Swan

New series to be offered soon.

We will work on the components that make up the AKC Novice Obedience class, break them down into parts and train the individual skills, and then put them all together eventually into what you will experience at a trial, including group work. The methods will be based on positive reinforcement, training the individual exercises to encourage enthusiasm from the dog and confidence from the handler. We will also practice the group work: 1-minute sit and 3-minute down. The goal is to have attentive dogs with good skills with happy attitudes. And I will be happy to answer any questions to help you feel prepared in prepping your dogs for the AKC CD title—so come armed with questions if you have them! You do not have to plan on trialing your dog in order to attend the class, everyone can benefit from a more obedient dog that pays attention to the handler with distractions around.

Your dog should be on a collar and leash—flat buckle collar preferred, you can use a martingale-type collar or chest harness for strong pullers. I prefer a leather leash if you are planning on entering the show ring in Obedience soon, but it is not required. Bring a hungry dog to class, along with some great treats they go nuts for: hamburger patties, natural balance roll (lamb or beef), roast beef, tri-tip, something that smells and tastes really good to your dog that they do not get anywhere else. Also, bring a crate or pen, some way to confine your dog so they can relax between exercises. If they are always “on” they can get a little bored or tired when it is their time to work.
