WHY WORK AT SHOWS???We always say, "If everyone would just work one class there would be plenty of help at a trial." So many of us don't help though and the list of excuses is endless. Putting on an agility trial is a lot of work and in order to assure there are trials in the future, we need to pitch in where we can. At nearly all trials someone is willing to train you to do any of these jobs. Most are quite simple. Aside from a possible free lunch, this is a look at the benefits of working various jobs at a trial. New and seasoned handlers can always benefit from working a class. Think of it as a free seminar. Jump Setter / Chute Straightener - You sit right in the heart of the action. You can watch various breed jumping styles, compare handling strategies, and study the course for your run or possible future training. Leash Runner - Great for observing what handlers do to get ready for a run. Exercises of people and dogs, mental strategies and motivation strategies. Score Table - Finally learn how to read those accumulator sheets. Did you know that one of these jobs is just checking someone else's work and copying the numbers? Don't be shy to try this. Gate Steward - A great way to meet your fellow competitors and learn the dog breeds. Course Builder - If you have trouble memorizing courses, get out there and build. Yes, you can build your own course. Watch what the judge does to tweak a course. What do they have in mind? Timer - You will really get a feel for start and finish line strategies with this job. You also get to watch the dogs run. Scribe - You have to watch the judge and only the judge. Watch for how consistent they are with their calls, where they are in relation to the handlers, what they emphasize on their courses. Score Sheet Runner - Watch some action, get the latest gossip from the score table, and get some exercise. What fun! Another way to look at these jobs is from the lighter side. Chute straightener and pole setter...helps work on those rear muscles to keep you looking great from behind when you run your dog! Scribe: Which judge has the most unusual quirks, the hitch of the pants, the sly application of chapstick, or was that a refusal? Timer: Be the first to find out who made time and who was the fastest! Gate Steward: A legitimate excuse to tell people what to do and when to do it! Leash Runner: Look for the latest in agility fashion statements. Course Builder: Helps build strong bodies 12 ways. Scorekeeper: Access to all those great treats you always see on the score table! Post a score, eat an m&m, post a score, eat a red vine, post a score.....
